TC Rating System

Introducing the TC Rating System for films. This is my version of a five star rating system where the focus is on how much I think you should watch it. It's not necessarily an indication of quality. I might give a high rating to an objectively terrible movie just because I think everyone should see it. On the flip side, I might give a low rating to an award winning, critically acclaimed, beautifully made movie just because I find it incredibly boring and I don't want you to waste your time watching it.

If you think about it, rating systems are a bit weird. To reduce a subtle objective analysis down to a single number is a bit ridiculous. They are however everywhere and I find my system useful if people ask me my opinion of a film.

Anyway here is my system:

  1. Unknown.
    This is a special rating for something I've not seen. It could be good, it could be bad, but I don't know because I've not seen it.
  2. Nope.
    Do not watch this film. I don't care what other people say, I don't like it. It's a waste of your time. Please watch something with a higher rating instead. If you do start watching it and I'm nearby, I'm going to wander off.
  3. If you're bored.
    If you have nothing else to do, and it's readily available, this would be ok to watch. With an open mind it's a fine way to pass the time, but no guarantees.
  4. Worth a watch.
    This is a good film. If the opportunity comes up to watch it, you should. But don't stress, it can wait till you have time.
  5. You should watch this.
    This is a great film and the next time you think about what film to watch, this should be on the short list.
  6. I'm going to bug you until you watch it.
    Make time to watch this movie. It's fantastic. Why haven't you watched it already?

I suppose I should give an example movie for each level and for no particular reason I've picked Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.

  1. Batman and Robin
  2. Last Action Hero
  3. Total Recall
  4. Running Man
  5. Terminator 2

Obviously you can disagree with my ratings, that's ok. But the system, that's flawless. So much so with only minor modification it can be used for other things too, like TV or books or games or even blogs. What rating do I give this blog? A solid two.

TC
